Thinking With Type - Accordion Books Typography  ///  Editorial Design  ///  Accordion Fold

Description:

This project consists of two accordion-fold books designed using an excerpt from Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton. The first book uses a single type size (9pt) to establish hierarchy through weight, spacing, alignment, and grid structure. The second book expands the typographic system to include scale, ranging from small body text to oversized callouts, exploring how variation in size affects rhythm, pacing, and readability within the accordion format.

Process & Learning:

The design process emphasized working within specific constraints to explore different methods of typographic hierarchy. Limiting the first book to one type size required careful use of contrast, negative space, and composition to avoid visual monotony. The second book introduced scale as a primary tool, requiring a clear system to balance large and small text without disrupting flow. Through these exercises, the project reinforced how hierarchy can be achieved through both subtle and dramatic typographic decisions, strengthening an understanding of restraint, structure, and expressive clarity in type design.
